This book, a collection of documents written by Soviet workers, is the first of its kind to be published anywhere in the world. The documents were smuggled out of the Soviet Union to contacts in Western Europe and America between 1976 and 1978. The workers who wrote them were rewarded with searches, beatings, prison and psychiatric hospital. Many are now on their way to the Gulag.
In clear, simple, painstaking language they set out the grim reality of the life of the Soviet working class: 'We are always hungry, especially in the second half of the month'; 'Soviet trade unions do not defend our rights', they 'have been merged into one organisation subordinated to the Party and the Government'.
In desperation, one group of workers led by Vladimir Klebanov, formed the Free Trade Union Association. This is the first independent organisation of Soviet workers known since the 1920s. The Free Trade Union is tiny, it is persecuted, but perhaps nonetheless marks a turning point in Soviet history.
